Ms Fisher
Instructor: 5th Grade
Welcome back!  I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Spring Break.  I find it amazing each year how fast the time goes.  I was able to spend some time hosting out of state friends and family through many of the monuments and museums in Washington DC over the break.  I hope you were able to find something enjoyable to do over the break as well.

Just before the break Permission Slips went home with all 5th grade students about our upcoming Field Trip to Washington DC.  Please make sure your child gets this information to you.  We will be taking a walking tour of many monuments and visiting the Natural History Museum and seeing an IMAX movie.  I hope ALL students will be able to come.  Please contact me if there might be a concern with your child being able to attend.  We will be doing a lottery for 5 parents from each classroom to ride with us on the charter bus, but other parents are able to join us if they provide their own transportation.  Please send in a note if you would like to participate.

Science Unit - Sound
We will start our unit on Sound immediately upon returning to school.  This unit is a fun opportunity for students to learn about how sound works and the connections with Light.  This unit will be short, maybe 3 weeks, as much of the information is similar to concepts from the Light unit we just completed.  We will have a demonstration from a Harpist about pitch and frequency relating to sound - always a favorite demonstration among the students.  Students will be provided with the whole unit from the beginning, including a Study Guide.  We always encourage students to take home their Science Binders to review lessons and begin studying for the unit exam.  I appreciate your support in encouraging your child to be studying at home.
Math Topics
We were able to do a quick unit on Decimals.  Concepts we covered were: reading, writing. comparing, ordering, rounding, adding, and subtracting.  The classes did so well we have already taken our unit test!  Results will be coming home by March 18th.

We will now begin a unit on Multiplication and Division of Whole Numbers and Decimals.  We will begin with Decimals to follow a progression of the last unit.  Right now my goal is to end the unit by March 25 as we leave for Spring Break.  If I discover we need more time I will continue when we get back, but I am optimistic about how the students have been doing lately.  If we all work as a team in keeping everyone focused I think we will be successful.  Please encourage your child to go on www.pearsonsuccessnet.com and Study Island to work on these concepts along with other topics we have already covered.  Studies have shown that students who practice their math skills outside of the classroom perform quite a bit higher.
